“When I first moved here [25 years ago], I listened to the old shrimpers, what to do and what not to do. And I always heard, you leave when the birds leave—they know more than we do. But this caught everybody off guard, ’cause there’s dead birds all around my house.”

Trinity Valley Community College (TVCC) is partnering with Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, to present Unsinkable: Voices of the Storm, an exhibition produced by the Bullock Texas State History Museum in Austin.
Based on the Texas Monthly October 2017 cover story, “Voices from the Storm,” this exhibition features the stories of 16individuals who survived, witnessed, and assisted others during the five days of rain brought on by Hurricane Harvey. Using story panels, audio, exclusive photographs, and content from more than a dozen Texas Monthly staff members who covered the hurricane, Unsinkable: Voices from the Storm gives viewers insight into what it was like for Texans affected by the storm.
Hurricane Harvey first made landfall on August 25, 2017, near Rockport, Texas. Over the next five days, the storm affected thousands of people across the state. Unsinkable: Voices from the Storm reveals stories of resilience, heartbreak, and recovery as told to the reporters by the Texans who lived it.
In a series of breathtaking photographs and interviews, these Texans come together to describe how everyday citizens fed, clothed, rescued, and cared for each other as the hurricane crashed down around them. In the words of R.G. Ratcliffe, a writer at Texas Monthly, “The people [he] met could have been your neighbors, but their humor and resolution in the face of adversity was the stuff of Texas legends.”
The exhibition is available to the public from October 3 through November 14 on the TVCC Athens Campus in the Learning Resource Center/Library during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. TVCC Athens is located at 100 Cardinal Drive.
